Rory Mcllroy wins his first British Open and 3rd Major Championship during his young professional golfing career. Rory captured the Open by two shots over Sergio Garcia and Ricky Fowler. The 2014 Open championship was played at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, England. The Par 72, 7350 yard golf course lays claim as the second oldest seaside course in England.
The 25 year old Open Champion finished the four rounds 17 under par at 271 with a final round of 71. Rory started the final round with a 6 shot lead while Garcia and Fowler cut the lead by 4 with excellent final rounds on Sunday.
“It feels absolutely incredible.” Mcllroy told reporters after his victory.
“I’m happy I gave myself a cushion because there were a lot of guys coming at me especially Sergio and Rickie Fowler.”
Rory”s Open title along with his 2013 PGA Championship and 2011 U.S.Open leaves the Masters title necessary for Rory to complete the career Grand Slam. Only Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods captured three majors by the ripe old age of 25. Rory now joins an elite threesome with plenty of time to add the Masters title to his resume.
America Golf considers Rory one of the shining stars of the Golf Tour and look forward to his continued success.
